"Green Shadows"

sold
7" x 8"
Oil on hardboard

Winona, MN
This little green house shrouded in foliage and shadows is a few blocks from my house. It's your typical family home here in Winona. The shadows and light were playing perfectly when I was out for an afternoon walk the other day. The whole while I spent painting this I thought about the "Secret Garden". And I have to admit I know very little about the story other than the title. But this is to me the "Secret Green House".

"Winona Auto Parts"

sold
7" x 8"
Oil on hardboard

Winona, MN

This is in a little alleyway in downtown Winona. I think the Winona Auto Parts sign is an old one because there is another business using this building now. I love how freeing it is to paint reflections in water. No straight edges or rigid structure to depict. It's fun to create the ripples and stark colors in the water. It really dances.

"Blue Trim"

7" x 8"
Oil on hardboard
sold
Winona, MN

Wow! It had been a while since I painted. And I always seem to go through periods of time where I paint a ton and then there are times where I get busy with life and can't seem to find the time. So hopefully I can go through one of those periods of productivity!

"Highway Overpass"

sold
5" x 8"
Oil on hardboard

Outside Winona, MN

I tried to stay very loose with brush-strokes on this one. This is also the first in a series of paintings that I've been meaning to embark on featuring scenes from highway driving. It's something that evokes a very american  feeling to me - road trips and rushing along the open road.

"Lion on Top"

sold
6" x 7"
Oil on hardboard
Winona, MN

Sign outside Winona National Bank. I remember, when I was young, my mom taking my brother and I to this bank. I'm not sure if my parents had an account here or not, but we would go up to the second floor where there were a bunch of stuffed African plains animals. All I really remember is the lion. I think the owners daughter or something went on safari hunts way back when...

"Over the Hill"

7" x 8"
Oil on hardboard
sold
Winona, MN

This is the first in some coming paintings that I tried a new technique. Instead of painting on a white surface I began this painting on a black surface. It was very refreshing! The painting seemed to ascend out of the surface as the painting progressed, as if out of a deep cave. And I was bringing light to the places that needed light and leaving dark what remained. Interesting way to paint.

"Sign of the Season"

7" x 12"
Oil on Hardboard
sold
Winona, MN

Wow. Over a month since my last painting. Must have been busy :) I hope to continue with some more painting in the near future. I want to be a little more diligent in my art.

This is a scene from downtown Winona. Snow on the ground. A sign that says "Keep Christ in Christmas" on one side and a feed the hungry type of sign on the other. A timely reminder of what's important!

"Third St."

6" x 8"
Oil on hardboard

Winona, MN

A wintery street in downtown Winona.

I truly enjoyed painting this one. I let loose a bit and really applied the paint in a forceful way. It's thick in spots! It has a real painterly feel.

"Broadway(Sixth)"

7" x 8"
Oil on hardboard
sold
Winona, Minnesota

A cold winters day in Winona. About a month ago we had over two feet of snow dump on us, but it's warmed up a few times since and rained so some of the snow is receding. The worst part being that all the snow is crusty and dirty. I love snow, but I like it to be fluffy and white!

This is one of the busier intersections in Winona. Just a few blocks from downtown. You may ask how there are so many trees so close to downtown. Well, it's because the entire length of the block on the right is occupied by the Alexander Bed & Breakfast and lawn - a historical mansion built in the 1800s.

I don't know if it's the case in other places, but in Winona we have both names and numbers for our street markers. So this street sign is for Broadway (Sixth) - the same street. Although most people in town just call it Broadway, whereas the streets on either side of broadway are always referred to as 5th and 7th.
